Description

The most notable features of this one-story commercial building are its storefronts. Dating apparently from the 1940s, according to the building permit files, each contains display windows set into black tile. The north storefront is especially interesting, with its panels outlined in yellow tile containing patterned tile insets. Both entries are deeply recessed to maximize the display space and have different configurations. Although the building is of brick construction, a large corrugated panel and a horizontal canopy obscure any original features on the facade. RESEARCH NOTES: A rather confusing pattern of ownership and usage emerge from the history of this building. At least until 1941, ownership of the parcel, which consists of two lots, was held separately. Amos Colborn and Ella Rarick, owners during the 1920s and 1930s, were assessed for separate improvements. The Sanborns indicate that a one-story bicycle repair shop was located at 216 in 1907 and a tailor and an office shared a separate one-story building. In 1912 the footprint of 218-20 was substantially the same but 216 appears to have been replaced by a larger masonry structure housing an undertaker. In the rear of 218-20 a small detached wood frame building sheltered the fire department engine. The 1928 Sanborns show 218-20 having grown to the size of 216, with a single occupant, an electric shop. A variety shop was located in 216. Amos Colborn was the electric shop proprietor in 1924; in fact his ownership, which began in 1920, continued at least until 1947 when he applied for a storefront alteration permit. Tenants of 216 in 1924 includes A.C.W. Fertilizer (James H. Black); William J. McCloskey, florist; and Lee 0. Woolery, real estate.
