Description
A tiled shed roof gives this one-story commercial building a Spanish style overtone. The stuccoed structure is corbeled at the roofline by a series of flat moldings. The display windows and entries have been altered. It is possible that the tiled section of the roof is also an alteration. RESEARCH NOTES: This building appears to have evolved over a period of years. The Commercial Bank was built on the southeast corner of Second and Ninth in 1898. In 1907 the rear of the parcel contained a one-and-one-half story house at the back, next to the alley. The same footprint prevailed in 1912, with the numbers "316" and "322" attached to an office in the rear of the two-story bank building. In 1928 the bank building encompassed 322 and 326, with a new, one-story structure, 330-36, labeled Itcity Offices." Apparently, after the City sold the house at the corner of Second and D that it had used for the purpose, it used the buildings at 26 N. Second, 222 East Ninth and perhaps, also, the library for various City functions. The directories and the Chamber of Commerce promotional literature assigned to 126 N. Second the distinction of being called "city halltt (in 1924 and 1928).
