Description
Although it has been altered, this two-story duplex retains the flavor of its Craftsman design. A cross-gabled roof with extended eaves and protruding beams covers the structure. A front facing gable spans the facade. A porch recessed across the facade is defined by four Tuscan columns resting on a low porch wall. Above the simple friezeboard, a once-open balcony has been fully enclosed with shingles. The rest of the structure is sheathed with narrow clapboard. Fenestration is symmetrically arranged with two doors and a one-over-one double-hung sash window to each side in the porch and a central tripartite window with shutters on the second-story. A two-story wing is set back on the north elevation. The building is in fairly good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Historically there have been as many as three freestanding dwelling units on this parcel, associated with addresses 645-53. Hattie F. Cole was the first owner after the Magnolia Land and Water Company, and held title from 1902 to 1919. This building was apparently the first on the property, and was shown on the 1907 Sanborn. Perhaps its original design was more suggestive of the American Foursquare genre.
