Description
The styling of this one-story commercial building is familiar from "Main Streetsw around Southern California. Of masonry construction, the vernacular building is influenced by the Renaissance Revival style. The facade is of brown brick, with a decorative "frieze1' defined by white glazed bricks. White bricks also form a "TW shaped ornament above the piers at either end of the building. Also marking the ends, urns are perched atop the parapet. The three storefronts represent a later period. They are shaded by a horizontal canopy. The transom appears to be in place above the canopy but has been covered over. All glazing appears to have been replaced. RESEARCH NOTES: This building occupies the south 16 feet of lot 27 and all of lot 28 of block 38 of the Magnolia townsite. As early as 1903 an improvement was assessed on lot 27; however the assessment for lot 28 is not given. Charlotte Maber owned both lots. The 1907 Sanborn indicates that a one-story brick structure with threestory fronts, housing a grocery, meat market, and barber, was on site. Ownership changed in 1907-08, with Frank S. Volk gaining title; however the usage remained the same, according to the 1912 Sanborn. Curran and Company with A.M. Curran and G.W. Colborn, proprietors of the City Market, was located at 228 in 1912-13. A historic photograph taken around that time clearly shows the market sign and a barber pole in the sidewalk, but the design of the building was different. Neither the white brick nor the urns appeared. A change in assessment amounts between 1923 and 1924 may indicate that the facade was remodeled. The footprint of the building remained the same, according to the 1928 Sanborn. Tenants of the property in 1924 included Charles Nelson, paints, at 226; Hugh MacLean, shoes at 228; and Dennis M. Kirkwood, barber, and Louis Coshionis, bootblack at 232.
