Description

Although small in breadth this one-story commercial building is imposing in appearance. Of concrete block construction, the severely styled structure contains a single storefront. The facade is capped by a parapet which rises in concave arches from each side. Centered on the parapet, the figure of an eagle with partially outspread wings crowns the facade. A deeply recessed entry is lined up below the eagle. The recess is flanked by small, slit-like windows protected by ornamental iron grilles. Only two other openings pierce the facade: small, circular vents in snowflake patterns set below the inverted arches of the parapet. The building appears to be substantially unaltered. RESEARCH NOTE8: The Sanborn maps indicate that an improvement was located on this property at least as early as 1907. In that year, and in 1912, a milliner occupied this one-story woodframe building on the site. The 1924 directory identifies the milliner as Mrs. Gertrude Thudium. By 1928 usage of the store had switched to "boot black." Historic photographs reveal that the building had a common facade with the structure to the north. Perhaps in 1929, when an agreement between the Magnolia Building and Loan Association and James E. Goodban, owners of the adjacent properties, was filed in the building permit file of 237, a new building was erected. Presumably the Magnolia Building and Loan Association had its office in the new edifice, which was appropriately bank-like in its architectural references.
