Description

A familiar, turn-of-the-century vocabulary informs the design of this boxy, one-story cottage. Capped by a hipped roof with a central hipped dormer, the building is sheathed with medium clapboards above a continuous sill and narrow clapboard below it. Endboards atop the sill, a paneled frieze, and a boxed cornice finish neatly trim the structure. The porch defined by two Tuscan Columns, is recessed on the south end of the facade. It contains an entry which is centered below the dormer and a double-hung sash window. Another window with a decoratively paned transom is centered on the north half of the facade. The house sits on a cobblestone foundation. Except for the addition of decorative window shutters, the house is unaltered and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: In 1898 or 1899 the Presbyterian Church bought this lot from subdivider N.W. Stowell. The 1899 assessment indicated a $500 improvement on the lot. Since the church was located at Ninth and Euclid, it is possible that this house was used as a parsonage. The church retained ownership until 1918.
