Description

A trace of the historic design of this one-story commercial building can be discerned. Stucco hides the brick construction. The parapet is edged by corbeling and recessed panels accent the frieze. An aluminum awning has been inserted over the original transom. Both storefronts have been altered. RESEARCH NOTES: This building appears to predate 1907, when a one-story, freestanding brick building with an attached two-story, wood frame residence in the rear was located on the site. Essentially the same building appeared on the 1912 and 1928 maps, except it became contiguous with structures to the north and south. In 1907 a photographer occupied 238, in 1912 a tailor, and in 1928 a cobbler and shoe store were housed at 238 and a jeweler at 240. The tailor was identified bv the 1924 directory as Fedor Hermes and his sons F.H. and G.A.
