Description
This one-story commercial building is typical of mid 20th century Main Streets. It has a tall parapet, mostly given over to signage, a horizontal canopy over the sidewalk, and a storefront. The central entry is deeply recessed to maximize the size of the display cases to either side of the central opening. Plate glass is butted together without mullions to form the angles of the window boxes. The aluminum framed door and transom are replacements. RESEARCH NOTES : The history of this building seems to parallel that of its neighbor to the south. In 1907 a one-story wood frame building which housed a watchmaker was located on the site. In 1912 the tenant was identified as a stationer. For several years during the 1910s Teresa and Elizabeth McQuillen, sisters of "Mac the Medicine Man," operated the Upland Bookstore at this location. Around 1924 ownership and use changed, and James Goodban opened his Brownbelt Shoe Store. A contemporaneous newspaper account recounted Goodban's past experience in Upland, first as the proprietor of a shoe store opposite the News office then as an employee of the J.J Atwood Company. The occasion of his securing the Brownbelt franchise was noted on the transformation of the store admired. Historic photographs reveal the building to have shared a common facade with its neighbor to the south, 237. Apparently, in 1929 a new building was erected. The improvement assessment jumps from $200 to $1000. An agreement between Goodban and the Magnolia ~uilding Loan Association, owners of the parcel to the south, provides further evidence of new construction. Goodban continued to operate a shoe store at this location and retained ownership of the property at least until 1941.
