Description
Historic photographs reveal that this building was once a near twin to its neighbor to the south. Today the two-story masonry structure has a stuccoed facade and the four windows which were once equally spaced across the second story are hidden by a sign panel or filled in. The storefront configuration, however, echoes the original design. Deeply recessed, the central entry is flanked by display cases. All of the original glazing has been replaced. Terrazzo paves the recess. A metal canopy has been suspended from the building over the sidewalk, leaving no trace of the original transom. RESEARCH NOTES: Like many other buildings on Second Avenue, this building's present appearance is misleading. The assessment record indicates that it was constructed in 1901-02 by N.J. Hamer. Charles Ruedy owned the property in 1906. The next owners were the Linneys: Edward from 1907 to 1911, then Sarah and Florence for at least twenty or so years afterwards. According to the building permit files Sarah Linney was compelled to bring the building up to code in 1929. The Sanborns indicate that the lower story was devoted to retail uses (furniture and crockery sales in 1907) and the upstairs was residential in use. In 1924 Herbert Naylor ran a notions store at this location. It is interesting to note on the aforementioned historic photographs that the four original upstairs windows and the brickwork was identical to that still visible on 247 Second.
