Description

The L-shape of this Queen Anne styled cottage is derived from an intersecting gabled roof. The gables are detailed by shaped bargeboards and herringbone patterned stickwork in the gable face. Clapboard sides the structure and is trimmed with endboards. A small porch abuts the front gable wing and is partially sheltered by a shed roof with a single post support. Beneath the shed roof, the entry is oriented perpendicular to the street. Tall and narrow double-hung sash windows are disposed around the exterior, one at the south end of the porch and a pair centered below the gable. Spandrels below the paired windows echo the herringbone design of the gable end. Unless the porch was altered, the cottage is remarkably intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This cottage may pre-date 1895, when an improvement was assessed to James H. Sourwine. Sourwine had a general store which also served as the post office at the northeast corner of Second Avenue and Eighth Street. From 1902 until 1908 George W. Duly, a teamster, was the owner and resident. He was succeeded by Edward B. Dickerman, proprietor of the Gem Barber Shop advertising "baths, cigars, tobaccos, and smokers articlesn (179 2nd Avenue).
