Description

A suggestion of the original design of this one-story commercial building can be gleaned from the adjacent structure, 267 Second. Both are of masonry construction; however this building has a stuccoed facade. The transom and frieze zone have been transformed into blank space for signs. Below an added canopy, two storefronts, probably constructed in 1944, have been substituted for the original one. All facade materials, including siding and glass, have been altered. RESEARCH NOTES: This building appears to have been built around 1910-11 by E.H. Haury as a dry goods and variety store. Haury had obtained the property from Dr. William and Lois Craig, who owned three lots and a two-story house built c. 1900 on this parcel and those to the north. A historic photograph of Hauryls store indicates that it had a central, double-door entrance which was set back between display windows. The openings were spanned by a large paned transom, with a corbeled brick detail at the cornice and a triangular parapet. V.H. and Nellie Wilson bought the building in 1922. The 1924 directory indicates that Wilson's Men's Custom Tailoring, Furnishings, and Dry Goods was the next store at this location.
