Description
Like many of its neighbors, this building bears no signs of its historic appearance when viewed from the front. It has the typical one-story organization of a broad parapet used for signage, with display windows and the storefront entry along the street footage. An aluminum awning shades the sidewalk. Research indicates that the building is of concrete construction and may actually have begun as two separate stores. RESEARCH NOTES: The assessment record indicates that this building was erected in 1924. Sylvester and Agnes Jessup were assessed for the new improvement. According to an article in the Upland News (4/4/24), it was announced that construction of a grocery immediately south of the Guy Clark building was about to begin. The 1924 directory indicated that Clark's Meat Market was at 270. In 1928 the Sanborn distinguished between the two by labeling "264" as the grocery and "266" as the meat market. Since no improvement was assessed in either location before 1924, it would seem that the northern half of the structure did not precede the southern half by very much. In fact an article on September 23, 1923 (Upland News?) noted that construction of a new store for Guy Clark of Clarkls Market was about to begin.
