Description
This charming Queen Anne cottage is one of the best examples of
the type in Upland. It is one-story and capped by a hipped and
gabled roof. Fishscale shingles face the gable ends while
clapboards edged with endboards sheathes the body of the house.
A front gable tops a projecting three-sided bay which has
decorative brackets marking the gable overhang. Similarly curved
wood ornaments adorn the sills of the windows below the brackets.
The window in the center of the bay is hidden by a hibiscus;
however, it appears to have rows of small, square panes which may
be glazed with colored glass across the upper section. Turned
wood columns with stylized capitals, sawn brackets, and a spindle
frieze distinguish the porch which abuts the bay. A cobblestone
wall defines the space, which is elevated five steps above the
ground. Another bay, identical to that on the facade, is set
back on the north elevation. The cottage sits on a stone
foundation and is in sood condition.
It appears that this cottage was moved to this site. The
assessment record indicated no improvement on the lot in 1934
when clearly the house pre-dates that time. On the basis of
style, it is estimated that the cottage was constructed around
1898. It is significant for its integrity and its embodiment of
late Queen Anne styling.
