Description
Although altered, this two-story commercial building retains a recognizable outline of its classical revival influenced vernacular original design. Of brick construction the building has had its facade stuccoed. A small parapet tops a simply articulated cornice and a paneled frieze. Each panel tops a bay. The north and center bays contain pairs of double-hung sash windows on the upper level and storefronts on the lower story. An entry to the upstairs apartment, topped by a boarded up transom, fills the smaller south bay on the street level with a single, narrow double-hung window above it. A continuous sill and plain moldings band the facade beneath the upper story openings. Alterations, in addition to the stucco and the possible removal of decorative elements, include all of the downstairs windows and doors and the addition of security grilles to the upstairs windows. RESEARCH NOTES: Both the assessment record and contemporaneous newspaper accounts confirm that this building was erected in 1923. The owner was Dr. Claude P. Mengle, an optometrist. When the building was completed in January 1924 the newspaper announced an open house for the people of Upland and vicinity to inspect the new building and its modern equipment. It further stated that Mengle, who had arrived in the community three years earlier, was a graduate of the Los Angeles School of Optometry and the secretary of the Orange Belt Optometry Association. The 1924 directory elaborated on the services offered: glasses fitted, lenses [sic] duplicated, and expert eye examinations. The directory also identified Margaret H. Holcomb as an upstairs resident, in addition to Dr. Mengle and his wife Mabel. In 1928, the Sanborn labeled the north storefront as a beauty parlor.
