Description
Typically, the facade of this one-story commercial building has been entirely remodeled. Wood siding covers the masonry construction, although the brick is still visible on the north (C Street) elevation. Apparently the original two entrances, one to an office suite on the north, the other to a storefront on the south, have been combined, leaving a single retail space entered on the south. All of the facade openings have been re-glazed. RESEARCH NOTES: The Los Anqeles Builder and Contractor of 1911 provides the clues to the origin of this building. In early February it was announced that Dr. W.H. Craig was planning a two-story office and store building with an estimated value.of $7500. Two weeks later, the LABC reported that John Gerry had been awarded the building contract. Apparently the intention to construct a twostory building was not realized because the 1912 Sanborn portrayed a one-story structure. In 1924 three of the Craig family doctors were practicing at 296 Second: William Craig, John Craig, and Mary Craig Williamson. They vacated the building in 1927 after erecting the professional building on the northeast corner of Second and D. In addition to the Craigs, the 1924 directory listed Maude S. Bonhamls restaurant in the building, at 294. Newspaper references to the "Az-u-lyk-it Cafe" seem to correspond to this establishment.
