Description

Queen Anne influences can be seen in this one-story, late 19th century cottage. An intersecting gabled roof gives the clapbbarded structure its IILn shape. In the corner of the "LW, a porch is covered by a shed roof supported by decorative brackets and a plain post. The narrowly proportioned fenestration is composed of two doors with boarded transoms set perpendicular to each other in the porch, a double-hung sash window to the left (north) of the entry, and a pair of double-hung sash windows centered below the front gable. A notable feature of the property is a low, garden wall of paneled cement with pyramid topped pedestals. Such walls are typical of the Victorian era but this is the only extant example in Upland. The house appears to be largely unaltered, except for the transoms, and in fairly good condition. RESEARCH NOTES : An 1895 assessment to James H. Sourwine indicates that an improvement was already on this lot by that year. Sourwine was a grocer whose store at the corner of Second Avenue and Eighth Street also served as the post office. Beginning in 1899 Peter Anderson was the assessed owner of the property. The 1898 directory already listed him as a rancher in North Ontario. In 1900 the directory entry was for Peter Anderson, laborer, and wife at Second Avenue and Olive. For a period during the 1910s the directories indicate that Anderson worked for cement contractor W.C. Cline. His ownership ended in 1922.
