Description
The straightforward design of this two-story, turn-of-the-century residence is somewhat reminiscent of a midwestern farmhouse. Sheathed with narrow clapboard, the building is capped by a steeply pitched, side gabled roof. The primary facade is dominated by a central gabled balcony which sits atop a shed roof covering a three-quarters length porch. The porch roof is supported by Tuscan columns resting on a solid balustrade, while the balcony features slightly thinner Tuscan columns, a turned balustrade and curved brackets. Fenestration consists of an offcentered door and two one-over-one sash windows with decorative transoms opening onto the porch, and another door and window off the balcony. Remarkably intact, the house is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Although the first owner of this house to live in it, at least according to the directories, was A.J. Doner in 1911-13, the house would seem to pre-date those years in terms of style. The Historic Houses and Sites file notes that H. Billington was at this location in 1909. The 1902-04 assessments note no improvements, narrowing the gap to 1904-09. One possible scenario is that D.D. Crew, who was assessed 1904-05, was responsible for the construction. The next owner was Henry D. Blakeslee, who lived on Twenty-first and San Antonio. Following A.J. Donerls tenancy, Ralph Lee (1913-15) and Minnie Martin (1916 onwards) seemed to have owned the house but lived elsewhere.
