Description
Eastlake inspired decoration distinguishes this charming, turnof-
the-century cottage. Capped by a hipped roof with a-boxed
cornice, the cottage is sheathed in clapboard. Endboards
culminate in sawn brackets. An extension of the roof defines
three bays on the facade. In the center, the recessed entry is
announced by an ornate gable on turned wood columns. Sawn and
turned decorative elements form a screen for the pediment. Below
the cornice a spindle frieze, more sawn decoration, brackets, and
an arch over the opening further embellish the composition. A
transom tops the doorway. The side bays contain double-hung sash
windows whose surrounds also feature woodwork and which are
glazed with leaded glass. Sunbursts adorn the spandrels below
the windows. vertical siding covers the raised foundation.
Unaltered and well-maintained, the cottage is a remarkable
survivor from 19th century Upland.
The assessment record indicates that this cottage had been
erected by 1895 when Annie Birch was assessed for $400
improvement. Subsequent years listed James Birch as the owner.
The 1898 directory listed Birch as a North Ontario rancher. In
1900 his wife was added to the entry and their location was given
as Second Avenue between 7th and 8th. The Birches remained
owners of the property until 1914. The house is significant for
its exemplification of Victorian era architectural trends, its
wealth of details, and its remarkable integrity.
