Description
Located on the northwest corner of Euclid Avenue and Vernon Drive, this one-story Craftsman bungalow is distinguished by its use of cobblestone. The primary elevation faces south, anchored by a porch with cobblestone pedestals at the east end. Sturdy, paired posts and a composition of interlocking beams support the gable over the porch. Capping the principal volume of the house, the main gable is perpendicular to that over the porch. Its eaves are pierced by a cobblestone chimney offset on the Euclid (east) elevation. Tripartite windows flank the entrance off the porch. The door features an interesting glazing design, with a lower light tapering towards the middle of the door and four square lights arranged on top of it. Other fenestration includes cant bays on the south and single double-hung sash windows. In good condition, the bungalow is not compromised by major alterations. RESEARCH NOTES: The assessment record indicates that C.H. Wimpress acquired this property from subdividers Walline, Atwood, and Meeke around 1911. In October of that year a building permit was issued to Dr. C.H. Wimpress for a bungalow costing $2500 to be erected at the corner of Euclid and Vernon. The 1912 Sanborn confirms that construction did take place. Later, in 1914, Dr. Wimpress, an osteopathic physician whose offices were in his house, added a garage. The 1912-13 directory notes that Wimpress lived and practiced on the west side of Euclid.
