Description

A pair of offset front gables keynote the design of this onestory Craftsman bungalow. Exposed beams and latticed vents characterize the gable ends. The south gable tops a porch, anchored by stout brick piers. The piers are spanned by a beam edged by dentils. An attic opening above the beam is also embellished by dentils along the corbeled sill. Five steps rise to the elevated porch; at their head the paneled door is flanked by side lights. Identical windows, broadly shaped with diamondpaned transoms are located on either side of the entry, the south one overlooking the porch, the north located on the wing north of the porch. Beneath a cross-gabled roof, the bungalow appears to have been re-sided. It is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES : The bungalow was probably built sometime between 1908, when the tract was subdivided, and 1912 when the Sanborn included this house (then w40511 N. Euclid). The property was owned for a year (1908) by Dr. Otto Kankel and for two years (1909-10) by Reid and Beatrice Board, perhaps in partnership with Kankel. When improvement assessments were recorded in 1914, this project and its $600 improvement were assessed to W.G. Mumper.
