Description
This picturesque Craftsman bungalow features a symmetrical facade anchored by cobblestone piers and foundation. The piers support a beam which spans the facade over which the side gable roof hangs. Centered above the facade, a front gabled dormer is outlined by a bargeboard with notched ends and decorative roof braces. It contains three windows, the central one taller than the sides with two tiers of small lights across their tops. A similar glazing pattern distinguishes the tripartite windows to either side of the central entry. Five steps, flanked by cobblestone rails, lead to the recessed porch. Spanning the facade, a stick railing encloses the space. Broad clapboard sheathes the building whose only facade alteration may be posts added at the top of the stairs to support the roof. The bungalow appears to be in fairly good condition. RESEARCH NOTES : Thomas Purvis, retired, built the home, probably in 1908. The lots on this block were subdivided in 1908, the first year he is listed as the owner. In 1909-10, the city directory indicates that Purvis lived on Euclid, in the second house (then) north of Ninth. The 1912 Sanborn illustrates this house, known at that time as 411 N. Euclid. In 1914 when improvement assessments were recorded for the first time after an approximately ten-year lapse, Purvis was assessed for an $800 improvement.
