Description
Similar in design to the house to the south, this is a one-story Craftsman bungalow. Its facade is defined by a three-bay porch which is tucked beneath the overhang of a side gable roof. A front gabled dormer containing a pair of square openings is centered over the facade. Clapboard sheathes the house, which sits on a brick foundation. Brick was also used for the pedestals which carry the porch posts. Although the porch is screened, the entry and windows appear original. An "XI1 design distinguishes some of the upper sash. The bungalow, which is relatively intact, is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This house was probably constructed shortly after W.F. Clark purchased the lot from the subdivider, circa 1908. Clark was assessed for the property in 1908 and 1909, May H. Gaff was the owner in 1911, and Jay C. Hall gained title in 1914. At that time a $650 improvement was assessed, but the house pre-exists 1914. It was shown on the 1912 Sanborn as "417." Hall was the first owner the Upland directories show living there. In 1912-13 he was associated with the Granger Hall Electric Company. The 1916-17 edition listed him as an employee of the Ontario Power Co. By 1919-20, Hall was the superintendent of the power company.
