Description
A large central dormer and a cobblestone porch are the characteristic defining features of this one-and-one-half story Craftsman bungalow. Sheathed in clapboard, the building is capped by a side gable roof. The dormer has triangular braces in its eaves and is screened in the manner of a sleeping porch. Stout posts on stone pedestals define the three bays of the porch. Elevated five steps, the recessed porch spans the facade. Stone stair rails flank the stairs and the stone porch walls are decoratively pierced with semicircles to provide for drainage. Within the porch the fenestration departs from the symmetry that organizes the rest of the facade. The door is offset to the south and framed by sidelights. At unequal distances from it on either side, windows have transom-like upper sashes. A brick chimney which possibly could have been stone emerges near the south end of the roof-ridge; otherwise, the bungalow is unaltered and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Most likely this house was built by John or Lillie Roberts, the first owners after subdivision in 1908. In 1911 John Roberts, pressman at the Mountain View Packing House, was in residence, according to the directories. The construction of the building is confirmed by the 1912 Sanborn which shows "423" N. Euclid, and by the 1914 improvement assessment for $600. Ella & Mattie Clark were the next assessed owners. Mattie Clark was a nurse.
