Description
A large front-gabled dormer is the focal point of this one-andone- half story side-gabled Craftsman bungalow. The dormer eaves feature carved triangular braces and rounded rafter tails; ornamental latticework is set into the peak of the dormer gable. The principal roof is similarly detailed. A pair of double-hung sash windows linked by a corbeled ledge are centered in the dormer. Narrow overlap siding sheathes the house. Stone walls with cement coping define the front porch, which spans the facade beneath the principal gable. Four altered wood posts with bracketed capitals set on the wall support the roof. The porch walls feature heavy stone arches over drainage openings. Centered on the facade, the entry features a wood-framed screen door. Identical double-hung sash windows with decoratively-paned transoms flank the entry. A brick chimney, perhaps originally stone, sits on the south end of the roof. Otherwise intact, the house is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This house was built for John Doner, the owner of the property from 1909-13, probably around 1908. Doner was the president of the Upland Hardware Company. The assessed owner in 1914 was Cecil Ware, and from 1919, was Mildred and Ralph Ware. Cecil Ware was identified as the vice-president and manager of the Upland Hardware Company in 1914 while A.K. Ware was the president; they both lived in this house. The 1916-17 directory lists Cecil's occupation as "rancher." Ralph Ware, according to the 1919-20 edition, was a clerk. The former address of the house, per the 1912 Sanborn, was m44511 N. Euclid.
