Description
Two front-facing gabled dormers with slightly Oriental flares add interest to this one-and-one-half story side-gable Craftsman bungalow. The dormers are joined by a shed-roofed balcony. The overhanging eaves are punctuated by notched rafter tails and bargeboards. Bark brown shingles sheathe the building. Defined by a cobblestone wall, the front porch spans the entire width of the house. Clustered piers at either end of the porch support the roof. The broad front door with three ascending lights is offset to the north. A wooden pergola extends to the north of the home; it too is supported by stone piers. The driveway is also lined with stones. No major alterations to this good example of Craftsman design were noted. BESEARCH NOTES: Shortly after he sold his home on west Foothill, George Augustus (I1GusI1) Hanson apparently built this home on North Euclid. The assessment record shows Hansonls ownership beginning in 1911, after the lot was purchased from subdivider G.B. West. The 1912 Sanborn shows "559" at this site. In the 1914 directory Hansonls employment was Hanson & Sears; Sears lived next door to the south. He had organized the G.A. Hanson Fruit Co. by the time the 1916-17 directory was published.
