Description
Stone buildings were built in Upland and other Southern ~alifornia communities from the end of the 19th century. 581 North Euclid Avenue exemplifies stone as used in a bungalow court, a rare building type in Upland. U-shaped, the court consists of two parallel rows of one-story units with a detached two-story stone house at the far end of the court. The front two units are free-standing and single-family while the structures behind them are detached duplexes. Tiled roofs, echoed by tiled hoods over entries and casement windows, act as a contrast to the stone exteriors. The rear unit is the focal point of the composition, with a central entry flanked by sidelights and paired casement windows on the upper story. In very good condition, the bungalow court is particularly important because it is such an unusual example for Upland. RESEARCH NOTIS: This notable interpretation of the bungalow court form was built by H.G. and Rosy Koster in 1921-22. It was used as income property by the Kosters, who lived on West 20th near San Antonio.
