Description

Attention to details sets this modest, one-story Craftsman bungalow apart from others of its type. A front gable spans the facade, faced with bands of conventional shingles, fishscale shingles, and latticed venting. Rafters with shaped tails are exposed in the eaves. The recessed porch also spans the facade, defined by tapered posts and a stick trailing. Offset slightly to the north, the entry contains a door paneled and glazed in the Craftsman manner. Double-hung sash windows are unequally spaced to either side of the doorway. Sheathed in wide clapboards, the bungalow rests on a stone foundation. It is unaltered and in fairly good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This house had been built by 1912, when it is shown on the Sanborn on the same parcel as its near twin to the north (668). The addresses for the two bungalows then were 650 and 670. Charles Roberts purchased the parcel from Leonard Puehler in 1909-10; either he or Puehler probably had the building constructed. The first possible reference to the house found in the directories was 1914 when painting contractor Samuel S. Myers (the assessed owner beginning in 1915) was listed at 630 Second Avenue. The "630" was probably a misprint as the 1916-17 and 1919-20 directories list Myerns address as 650. In 1919-20 the listings began including his wife, Myrtle. The 1922 and 1924 directories show his address as "660," finally, in 1934, "656" appears, with Allen Harrison, an insurance agent, and his wife Vivian, in residence.
