Description
A curved porch which spans the facade and wraps around the southeast corner of the building distinguishes this one-story Craftsman home. Its bellcast hipped roof, hipped dormers centered over the front (east) and south elevations, and boxed cornice recall turn-of-the-century housing. The porch is defined by a cobblestone wall punctuated by pedestals carrying tapered posts. Five steps with stone rails lead to the entry, which is centered below the dormer. Topped by a slightly extended lintel, the door is paneled and glazed and has a wood-framed screen. Large, double-hung sash windows are located in the side bays. The porch has been enclosed with glass on the south. No major alterations to this clapboarded dwelling were observed. It is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This house was built sometime between 1905 and 1912, when George B. West was listed in the directory on the west side of Euclid between F and G. It is located on lot 566 of the Ontario Colony, which was assessed to Josiah Dundas from 1900 through 1906. The assessments indicate trees and vines on the lot, but no improvements. In 1907-08 it was owned by the Euclid Fruit Company and in 1909 H.H. Pierce had title. West was assessed from 1909 on, and immediately subdivided a portion of the lot, including this property. His occupation, according to the directories, was an orange grower. The 1912 Sanborn, which did not extend north far enough to illustrate this location, does label the property east of the West subdivision on Euclid as an orange grove. In 1924 the Wests subdivided the grove, which became Tract 1797, and later moved to a new house on Laurel Avenue. Earl and Edna Swan were the occupants of 635 N. Euclid in the 1920s. Edna was known locally as a photographer.
