Description
The craftsman idiom is effectively interpreted in this two-story
residence. Its gable roof has an extremely low pitch, and is
anchored by front gables over either end of the facade.
Overhanging eaves are detailed with single and paired beams,
extended rafters, and bargeboards. Square butt shingles sheathe
the structure, which rests on a cobblestone foundation. Stone
was also employed for the porch walls and the chimneys. Another
front gable announces the central entry, its open gable beam
articulated by posts and a cross beam. Sidelights flank the
doorways. Clustered and tripartite windows in the upper and
lower side bays and in the upper central bay feature continuous
sills, extended lintels, and bands of small lights across their
upper portions. No major alterations were noted.
This fine example of Craftsman styling was built in 1916-17 for
Frank and Bertha Lemon. Lemon was an important local figure, the
president of the commercial National Bank. The house is
significant for its architectural quality and its association
with a prominent member of the community.
