Description
Intricate detailing highlights this modest one-story Craftsman bungalow. Clad in bands of narrow and wide overlap siding, the house rests on a stone foundation. The roof is side-gabled, with a broad front gable that spans the width of the porch dominating the front facade. The eaves overhang, and the rafters are exposed. At either end of the porch, wooden posts with brick caps and inverted cross ornaments support the roof. Smaller pedestals, similarly detailed, flank the cement steps leading to the offset front door. The wooden front door has three small lights atop three vertical lights. Directly north of the door, the bottom of the chimney is built into the front facade. An unusual treatment, the chimney has a stepped-up design, with detailing identical to that on the porch posts. Small square windows are placed on either side of the chimney. Set back on the facade, the north wing is banded by a row of double-hung sash windows. No major alterations were observed, and the bungalow is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Bertrand C. Nichols was the owner of this lot at the time of the first assessed improvement, 1917. Nichols was a clerk with the Santa Fe railroad. In 1918, title to the house passed to Frank and Mary White.
