Description
Generous scale and attention to detail distinguish this two-story
Craftsman residence. Rectangular in plan, it has a side-gabled
roof and a shingled exterior. Latticed vents in the gable ends
are accented by projecting beams. Most of the front (east) and
north elevations are wrapped by an attached, L-shaped porch and
balcony. The porch is defined by a cobblestone wall punctuated
by battered pedestals carrying posts with abbreviated crossbeam
"capitals." An "x" patterned wood railing encloses the balcony
above the porch. Two banks of tripartite windows overlook the
front porch. Other openings are doubled casements or double-hung
sash; most openings are banded across the top by small, square
lights. The house sits on a stone foundation, as substantially
unaltered, and in good condition.
As the northern anchor of the Euclid Craftsman District, this
fine example of Craftsman styling plays a prominent role in the
streetscape. It was built in 1911-12 for Egbert B. and Mary T.
Clark. A notice in the Los Ancreles Builder and Contractor on
12/21/11 reads:
"Residences - Upland. Egbert B. Clark owner; G.E.
Bragden, 1123 Maple Ave. Pasadena contractor; all labor
and materials for the erection of a two-story, nine
room frame residence in Upland. $4000."
Clark was an orange grower and had previously owned much of
Ontario Colony lot 557 from which the Doner and Malone
subdivision, in which this house is located, was carved.
Beginning in 1923 the owners and residents of the house were
Raymond C. and Grace A. Norton. Norton was the manager of the
local branch of the Bank of America and active in the economic
life of the city.
