Description
An L-shaped plan characterizes this one-and-two-story Spanish residence. The projecting wing of the IbLN is one-story and topped by a tiled front gable. A multi-paned window with a heavy lintel faces the street from the gable end. The two-story wing is set back and side gabled, with a three-bay arcade attached to the front beneath a tiled shed roof. Two of the arcade bays face a walled patio while the third is a porte cochere. A balcony in the second story of this wing is enclosed by ornately turned balusters and carved posts. Architectural details include arcade impost moldings and terracotta flooring, a deeply recessed round window, a diamond patterned window grille on the upper story, and a chimney on the north elevation. The house has been re-stuccoed but appears otherwise unaltered. It in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: John and Grace Browning had this house built in 1930-31. Browning, listed as a rancher in the directory, was Itbit in citrusb1 according to Upland old-timers; one of his groves was west of Euclid south of 24th Street where Browning Street is today. He was also a very active member of the Masons.
