Description
A pair of front gables, one over the right (west) side of the facade, the other a gablet, are the distinguishing features of this turn-of-the-century cottage. Both gable ends are faced with fishscale shingles and pierced by circular vents. The primary roof form is hipped; an addition to the east has a shed roof. Set on a stone foundation, the cottage is sheathed in medium overlap siding edged with endboards. The entry, to which a hood has been added, is offset to the east and leads to the porch which has been enclosed. A double-hung sash window is centered beneath the front gable on the other half of the facade. In fairly good condition, the cottage is only slightly set back from the G Street sidewalk and parkway. RESEARCH NOTES : The early assessments for this house are linked to those for 669 North Third because of the way lots 1,2, and 3 of block 10 of Magnolia were subdivided. The $200 improvement assessed to the Magnolia Land and Water Company in 1900 was probably 669 North Third. The 1907 Sanborn shows an empty corner parcel; "364" appears on the 1912 map. Perhaps this house was built by B.P. Swartzendruber, the assessed owner 1906-1910 or by John W. Bryden, who was assessed for a somewhat smaller parcel beginning in 1911.
