Description
A circular "stair towerw acts as the focal point of the design of this two-story, Spanish residence. The rear, two-story wing is capped by a tiled hip roof while tiled front and side gables define a one-story projecting wing and an arcade. Arched openings of different sizes and proportions characterize the design. The front gable wing contains a large, stylized ogive window and a round-headed archway into a patio. Extremely broad arches define the arcade which lines the patio and continues over the driveway in a porte cochere. Tall and narrow, round-headed openings ascend the stair tower, which is banded at the top by arched corbeling. Other features include a deeply recessed round vent with an iron grille in the gable end and casement windows. The house has been re-stuccoed but is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Assessment records reveal that Joella Gingerich was the owner of this property when the lot was split in 1932 and presumably this house was built. In the 1934 directory Frank Gingerich, her husband was listed as a plasterer. According to notes in the Upland library, Gingerich was also involved in citrus. Mrs. Gingerich still lives in the house today (1990).
