Description

This two-story, turn-of-the-century farm house is sheathed with wide horizontal siding and edged with endboards. The main portion of the dwelling is covered by a side gabled roof, accented by a central gabled dormer with a balcony. A porch extends across the facade and is protected by a shed roof supported by wood posts with decorative brackets. Old maps indicate that the porch was formerly "L" shaped, wrapping the northeast corner. The house is minimally fenestrated with a paneled and glazed door located at the south end of the porch, a pair of sash windows to its right (north), and a narrowly proportioned door in the balcony. The house is in fairly good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: There was a $200 improvement on a parcel which included this property in 1902, one year after ownership passed from the Magnolia Land and Water Company. T.H. Davis owned it for 2 years, then Charles S. Stevens for two years, who was followed by B.P. Swartzendruber. Swartzendruber's name appears often in the old lot books as a land owner; the 1907 and 1909 directories list him as first, a carpenter, and next, an orange grower, who lived at the southwest corner of G and Third. The 1912 Sanborn indicates that this was the closest house to the corner, although a one-story residence near the alley facing G Street was also present. The next owner was Alice Riley (from 1909). The 1917 directory listed the Riley family at 669 Third as follows: Gladys A. Riley, teacher, 10th Street School Harriet E. Riley, teacher, Grammar School Will C. Riley (Hamilton & Riley) William H. Riley A Myrtle A. Riley was also listed in 1912-13.
