Description
Set far back on its property behind a screen of trees and a
garden, this is a one-story, Craftsman grove house. A side-gable
caps the clapboarded structure, with a cross gable set over a
recessed porch. Piers on stone pedestals mark each end of the.
porch. The entry and a tripartite window open off the space.
Other details include vertical venting in the gable end,
bargeboards with rounded ends, and exposed beams and rafters.
The vegetation hides other features from view. No alterations
could be seen and the property, which contains a remnant of the
original grove, is in good condition.
This house is located in block 453 of the Ontario Colony. It was
owned by John Morrow in 1917 when a $480 improvement assessment
was made. William and Alba Philpott purchased the 10 acre lot in
1918; by 1919 $1125 in trees and vines were assessed. Subsequent
owners of the house and grove included Clyde J. and Louise C.
Bryant (1921-22) and Alfred W. and Nora M. Eells (from 1922).
The Eells subdivided a portion of the lot around 1924. Alfred
Eells remained in the citrus industry and continued to be listed
in directories as a rancher; his wife was a prominent member of
the Upland Woman's Club. The property is significant as an
intact example of a grove house, which includes a remnant of a
grove, and which more over is integrated with the development of
Euclid Avenue.
