Description
A typical example of turn-of-the-century cottage design, this residence appears unaltered. Sheathed in narrow clapboard, the bungalow is crowned by a hipped roof with a central hipped dormer. The dormer contains a central opening flanked by lattice covered vents. Recessed into the northern section of the facade, the porch is enclosed by plain wood posts and a low wall. A central door and a sash window with a diamond-paned transom open onto the porch. A similarly proportioned double-hung sash window is centered on the south half of the facade. Other features include a boxed cornice, plain friezeboard, endboards, and continuous sill. The cottage is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES : L.E. Shultz, rancher, is the first owner discovered to have lived at this location. The 1909-10, 1911, and 1912-13 directories place him at the southeast corner of G and First (there was no house on the lot north of this one at the time). Shultz acquired the property in 1906 from E.W. Thayer. Since the 1903 assessment to Thayer was for land only, it seems reasonable to assume that Shultz had the house built. The 1907 Sanborn showed a tent house at this location while the present residence was on site by the publication of the 1912 maps. The next owner, William Gosau, an orange grower, lived near Eleventh and San Antonio.
