Description
Although it has been re-clad with stucco, this one-story bungalow still displays Craftsman styling in the design of its roof, fenestration and porch. The bungalow has a multi-gabled roof detailed with exposed beams and rafters and vertical venting. An L-shaped porch, which spans the full length of the west elevation and two-thirds of the north elevation, is defined by tapered wood posts resting on a low stone wall. Front gables announce the entry on the west while a pergola shades a doorway on the north. Fenestration is representative of the style and includes two tripartite and single double-hung sash windows. With the exception of the stucco, the bungalow is intact and in good condition. Located in the rear of the lot, facing G Street, 138 G Street is a detached one story bungalow of modest proportions. It has an L-shaped gable roof, horizontal siding, and a porch tucked into its northeast corner. A single tapered post supports the roof over the porch. Windows are tall and narrow double-hung sash, and the doorway is paneled and glazed. In fairly good condition, the house appears unaltered. RESEARCH NOTES: The house in the rear of the property, 138 G (formerly 238) preceded the front house. It was probably built around 1905 when Ernest E. Wood, a blacksmith, lived there and was the owner of the lot. James F. Jackson, a laborer, succeeded Wood. It was moved to accommodate the new house. Walter Hilty built the front house in 1926, according to members of the family. Hilty, who worked for Mehl Hardware, lived in the house until 1937, when it was sold to Mr. Hilty's daughter and her husband (Helen and Ernest Olson). Olson, who owned Olson's Meat Market in Upland from 1928 to 1975, lived in the house until 1956. In the 1930s he served as a city councilman. Olson's Meat Market is still in business, operated by Ernest Olson's son Roger.
