Description
The simplicity of Mission Revival influenced Spanish styling can be seen in this one- and two-story residence. Stucco clad, the building is capped by a flat roof hidden by a stepped parapet. Tiled hoods shade the facade windows. The entry is centered on the principal facade and contained within a raised bay pierced by an arch. A low stucco wall defines a patio extending south from the entry. Also on the south elevation, a two-story wing contains a re-glazed opening. Further details are obscured by foliage. The building sits on a stone foundation, and appears to be in fairly good condition. A pair of simple, late Craftsman cottages face G Street in the rear of the property. Both have front gables faced with shingles; below the gable ends 232 has board and batten siding while 242 has horizontal overlap siding. Plain posts and stick railings enclose both porches. Entries are off-center. The cottages are in fairly good condition and are relatively unaltered. RESEARCH NOTES: This house was probably built in 1921 when the two portions of the parcel came under single ownership. A prior house, also known as 690, was on site by 1907; it was moved around the corner to become "338" (now 232) by 1928. The eastern-most house (242) appeared by 1912 ("346"). Residents of 690 during the 1920s included members of the Walter Hilty family. Walter was a clerk at Mehl Hardware Company.
