Description
Located on the southwest corner of Second Avenue and G Street, this is a one-story, turn-of-the-century cottage. While its hipped roof and generally boxy proportions are original, the porch has been enclosed and the windows replaced, giving it an altered appearance. An enclosed soffit, encircling friezeboard, central gabled dormer containing a vent and overlap siding are details which date to the construction of the house. Shuttered twenty-light windows located to either side of the entry are not. Tidily landscaped, the building is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES : Since this parcel was empty on the 1907 Sanborn, it was probably improved by Florence A. Algero, the assessed owner 1906-10. The first reference to this location found in the city directories was in 1907 when M.W. Parks, a carpenter, was listed at the southwest corner of G and Second. Parks appears in the assessment record in 1904-05. The house was in place by the time the 1912 Sanborn was drawn. Later owner/residents included Cooley Root and Howard and Elinor Graves. Graves was a foreman with G.A. Hanson.
