Description
Elements of two popular Victorian era styles are integrated into the design of this one-and-a-half-story residence. It displays the hipped roof typical of the turn of the century enlivened by a tower-like dormer crowned by a mansard roof. The dormer contains three equally spaced windows. A three-sided bay on the north end of the facade is topped by a front gable. Very narrow clapboards sheathe the structure beneath the enclosed soffits. A porch is recessed across the south section of the facade, shaded by an extension of the roof. Paired ports and a stick railing may be alterations. Other possible alterations include the dormer and porch windows and the stone facing of the bay below the three original, double-hung sash windows. A curious combination of Queen Anne, Second Empire and turn-of-the-century features, the residence is in good condition and enhanced by its landscaping. RESEARCH NOTES : Evidence for the construction date and owner of this house is inconclusive. The house appears in the 1912 Sanborn. M.G. Swan, mechanic, is listed in the 1907 directory on the north side of G Street between Second and Third. In 1909 Swan is shown as a carpenter residing at the northeast corner of G Street and Second Avenue. Swan was the assessed owner in 1895-1900 and 1906-10; L.R. Swan owned the property 1901-05. Either one could have built the house. M.G. Swan sold to Sarah Crane, the wife of George Crane, City Recorder, Justice of the Peace, and jeweler; the Cranes owned the property until between 1911 and 1914 but did not live there. Paul Bodenhamer, orange grower, and W.J. Bodenhammer, real estate and insurance, apparently rented the property; in 1920 John c. and Emma Landgraf purchased the house and moved in.
