Description

Framed by trees, this is a one-and-a-half-story Craftsman bungalow. It is side gabled, with a large, front-gabled dormer centered over the facade. Below the lattice vent the dormer contains a pair of double-hung sash windows. Spanned by a flattened arch, the porch is recessed across the facade. Tapered columns sitting on stone pedestals and a stick railing define the porch space. Stone also appears on the foundation and on the pedestals flanking the four steps up to the porch. Narrow clapboard sheathes the structure. The house has been "embellished" by non-period details including a dormer bargeboard molding, a spindle porch frieze and Colonial window and door frames. In good condition, the bungalow occupies the northwest corner of Second and G. In the rear of the property, 157 G Street appears to pre-date the main house. It resembles photographs of early, "settlement" houses characterized by single story massing side gable roofs and shed roofed porches. These features can be seen on this example, along with an offset entry and tall, narrow double-hung sash windows spaced unequally to either side of the doorway. Plain ports and a turned wood railing enclose the three-quarter length porch. Set on a stone foundation, the house has an exterior of horizontal wood siding. It is well-maintained, with a picket fence edging the front yard. RESEARCH NOTES: John H. Kienzle purchased this parcel from D.C. Funk in 1905, and was still the assessed owner in 1919. Assessments for improvements on the lot were $50 in 1903 and $690 in 1915; no other records were kept. The house appears on the 1912 Sanborn; however, a smaller house with a different footprint preceded it on the lot, according to the 1907 Sanborn. That earlier house may be what is now 157 G and could have been moved. Kienzle is listed at the northwest corner of F [sic] and Second in 1907 and at the northwest corner of G and Second in 1909. Kienzlels profession was tinner, and he was employed by the Upland Hardware Company in 1912-13 and the Eymoann-Goerz Company in 1916-17. In 1924 Edna and Stephen Allee lived at this address.
