Description
Although altered, this one-and-a-half-story Craftsman bungalow is recognizable through its side gable roof and large, front-gabled dormer. Rafters with shaped tails appear in the eaves. The dormer, which is centered over the facade, contains three diamond-paned windows linked by a window box. Narrow overlap sheathes the structure. The porch, which probably spanned the facade, has been enclosed; however, beams extending to the south form a pergola-like enclosure. Additional alterations include the window glazing, the addition of window shutters, and a scallop-and-dart patterned fascia. The bungalow is neatly landscaped and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: The only conclusive evidence about the date of this house is that is was on site when the 1912 Sanborn was produced. It can perhaps be traced further back when the 1909-10 city directory shows F. French, a day laborer, living on the west side of Second in the second house north of G Street. The owner at this time (1909-13) was John R. Francis, who lived on Third Avenue. Since the prior owner (1907-08) was B.P. Swartzendruber, who also lived off the property and, moreover, seemed to figure in numerous real estate transactions, a possible assumption is that the house was built circa 1909. Other possibilities are that it was built by D.B. Winger in 1906 or Francis M. Higley in 1905, who was the first owner after The Magnolia Land and Water Company. The first owner/resident was apparently James V. Benson, a carpenter, who lived with Jennie Benson, a teacher, at "721" (1911); the address was listed as n719w beginning in 1912-13.
