Description
Although altered, this two-story residence retains many elements of its original Craftsman design. It is side-gabled and sheathed in clapboards. At one time an attached porch spanned the facade; it has been enclosed and its roof changed. Still visible, though, are low cobblestone porch walls punctuated by battered pedestals carrying tapered posts. The original fenestration cannot be determined. There are two multi-light sash windows centered on the upper level, while the lower story contains a central entrance with sidelights flanked on each side by quadripartite casements. The house is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This house, located behind 793 North Second Avenue, sits on a parcel which originally was part of the corner property. It was split off in 1919; however, the house seems to have pre-dated the lot split. In the 1916-17 directory Peder W. Tonneson, the secretary of the Upland Chamber of Commerce and a passenger agent of the Pacific Electric Railway, was listed at this address. In 1919 the west half of the property was acquired by Teresa and Elizabeth McQuillen of the Upland Book Store. The house appears for the first time on the 1928 Sanborn. The misses McQuillen were the sisters of Patrick McQuillen, who held title to the east half of the property.
