Description
The familiar turn-of-the-century vocabulary is varied by window and dormer treatments in this boxy one-story cottage. A hipped roof with a central clipped gable dormer sits atop a paneled frieze and boxed cornice. Rising through the open gable end, the dormer window is double-hung with a segmental arch head. Concrete steps with stone side walls lead to a porch cut away from the southeast corner of the structure. The entry is sited perpendicular to a double-hung sash window centered on the rear porch wall. Another sash window with a transom-like upper sash, and a fixed, diamond-shaped window are located on the south portion of the facade. The cottage is sheathed with medium horizontal siding below a continuous sill and narrow clapboard above. Sited behind a picket fence and landscaped yard, the cottage is remarkably unaltered and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: The history of this property is inextricably linked to that of the property adjacent to it on the south. Until 1914, the parcel associated with 733 extended 31 1/2 feet further south. The assessment record for the former, larger parcel reveals that an improvement was made in 1899 by A.C. Dewey, at the same time that C.A. Dewey improved the corner. In the 1900 directory Chester Dewey was listed as living with his wife at First and G (the same way location ascribed to Charles Dewey). In 1907 A.C. Dewey, orchardist, was again located identically to Charles A. Dewey, at the northwest corner of First and G. Beginning in 1905 Jennie Train became the assessed owner of this property. In 1927 Addison Chester Dewey is assessed and listed in the directory with wife Lula as Chester Dewey, rancher.
