Description

One of the best examples of Colonial influenced, turn-of-the-century styling in the neighborhood, this is a one-and-a-halfstory residence. Its hipped roof descends in two tiers, the upper over the body of the house, the lower over the facadespanning porch. A third hipped roof tops a central dormer. Double and triple brackets punctuate the enclosed soffits of each roofline. The dormer which is shingled, contains a pair of windows. Narrow clapboards sheathe the lower story. Three bays, defined by Tuscan columns set atop a cobblestone wall, define the porch. A gable whose pediment is decorated with shields and scrolls tops the central bay. The entry is offset to the left (south) behind it. To either side, windows with leaded glass transoms rise from a sill course. Five steps are necessary to reach the house, which sits atop a raised foundation of larger stones than those used for the porch. Apparently unaltered, the residence is in good condition.

The Huehn family took title to this property in 1908 and were apparently residents at least into the 1930s. The house must have been built either by Francis M. Higley, who owned the block between 1901 and 1905, or by Joseph Seymour (1907) or John and Mina Huehn. Huehn, listed as a general agent in 1924, is shown at this location as early as the 1909 directory. The house does appear on the 1907 Sanborn. It is notable for its exemplification of the American Colonial Revival style as it was applied to what was essentially a vernacular type, the one-story, hipped roof box. Here the basic vocabulary has been enlivened by a multiplication and articulation of the roofline and the incorporation of details such as a classically ornamented pediment, decorative brackets, and leaded glass.
