Description
Dense plantings partially obscure the view of this one-and-onehalf- story Craftsman bungalow. A steeply pitched side gabled roof with a central gabled dormer covers the structure. Lattice work in the gable peaks, carved rafter tails, extended eaves and carved brackets embellish the roofline. A porch is recessed within the northern two-thirds of the facade. Supporting the porch roof are two Tuscan columns resting on a low wall. Fenestration is symmetrically arranged with a central door and a sash window overlooking the porch, a sash window on the south portion of the primary facade, and a band of sash windows filling the face of the dormer. The bungalow appears to be unaltered and in fair condition, RESEARCH NOTES: This is another of the properties included in the Swan family holdings in the early assessment records, It was assessed to A.H. Brown 1909-11; however, Brown was not shown in the city directories. The bungalow was in place by the 1912 Sanborn and the owner, Susan E. Westland, did reside on the property. William E. Westland, the son of Walter Curtis Westland, was also a resident. The senior Westland had established The North Ontario News and published it until his death; his son continued to publish and edit the Upland News until 1928.
