Description

Another turn-of-the-century cottage, this one-story building has been altered somewhat with a rear, two-story addition. The original building has a bellcast hipped dormer. A pair of double-hung sash windows are located in the dormer. The porch nearly spans the facade and is covered by an extension of the roof. Both the house and porch wall are sheathed in narrow clapboards. Tuscan columns rise from the porch wall to the roof overhang. The entry is in the center bay of the porch but slightly offset to the left (north). Double-hung sash windows of different proportions are located in the bays to either side. Set upon a stone foundation, the house has no other major alterations than the addition. It is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: The estimated date of construction for this house is based solely on style. M.G. Swan was the assessed owner from the time records were kept (1895) until 1908, when the owner is Mrs. L.R. Swan. After two years of possession by Hannah M. Light (1910-12), Swan is again the owner (1913). At this point (1912-13) he actually lived in the house; previously his residence may have been 708 N. Second Avenue. Swan, carpenter, sold to A.H. Brown (retaining an interest in the property for a year) who in turn sold to Edith Troeller in 1919. Troeller was the widow of C.F. Troeller and was the principal of the Upland Grammar School. Harold L. Troeller, a clerk at Robert Weiss Hardware, was also in residence 1919-20.
