Description
This example of the American Foursquare genre is two-story, hip
roofed, and clad in narrow horizontal siding. Rafters with
rounded rafter tails project from the overhanging eaves. A
central gablet contains an attic vent. Below a plain frieze, the
second story facade contains a pair of double-hung sash windows
widely spaced. Extending across the entire facade, and part of
the south elevation, the porch is topped by a pent hipped roof.
Detailed the same as the second story roof, the porch roof is
carried by Tuscan columns set atop a sided porch wall. The
southern wing of the porch has been glassed in. The entry is
located off the north porch bay while a window with a leaded
glass upper sash occupies the central bay. Resting on a stone
foundation, the house is unaltered other than the non-intrusive
porch enclosure and is in good condition.
Like the other lots on this block, this property passed from the
Harwood Brothers to the Magnolia Land and Water Company to
Francis M. Higley in the assessment record. In 1909 the owner is
listed as J.P. Brown; from 1910 until at least 1919 the owner is
W.L. Brown. Brown was a partner in Johnson and Brown, grocers at
203 Second Avenue. According to the Historic Houses and Sites
file, his wife Isabella was still in residence in 1934.
A larger scale than most of its neighbors and the use of the
American Foursquare idiom distinguishes this residence. Other
elements which make this an above-average representative of the
type are its high degree of integrity and the generously
proportioned, L-shaped porch was incorporated into the plan.
