Description

A familiar turn-of-the-century vocabulary informs the design of this one-story cottage. The characteristic hipped roof is detailed with a central, hipped dormer containing a three-part attic vent and a boxed cornice. An off-centered door and two sash windows with decorative transoms overlook an open porch which spans the facade. Four turned columns frame and delineate the porch bays. Medium clapboard edged with endboards sheathes the cottage which rests on a stone foundation. In a somewhat unusual treatment, the siding is extended down several tiers over the porch to form an expanded frieze. The cottage is intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Although a small house is present on this site on the 1907 Sanborn, the footprint of the current residence does not appear until 1912. Mrs. R.E. Ames was the assessed owner from 1904 through at least 1919. A widow, Mrs. Ames was located here by the 1907 directory. Apparently the larger house replaced the smaller one c. 1908.
